“Listen.. people be askin me all the time,
Yo Mos, what’s gettin ready to happen with Hip-Hop?”
(Where do you think Hip-Hop is goin?)
I tell em, “You know what’s gonna happen with Hip-Hop?
Whatever’s happening with us”
If we smoked out, Hip-Hop is gonna be smoked out
If we doin alright, Hip-Hop is gonna be doin alright
People talk about Hip-Hop like it’s some giant livin in the hillside
comin down to visit the townspeople
We (are) Hip-Hop
Me, you, everybody, we are Hip-Hop
So Hip-Hop is goin where we goin
So the next time you ask yourself where Hip-Hop is goin
ask yourself.. where am I goin? How am I doin?”

That’s from Mos Def’s Fear not of Man. People talk about Joomla in the same way:

  • “What’s going to happen with Joomla?”
  • “Joomla needs to head in this direction”
  • “Joomla should do that”

I used to be one of those people, blogging about what Joomla should do for years. Trust me, it’s a lot easier that way. Things got a lot harder, but a lot more effective and rewarding when the questions are reversed:

  • “What’s going to happen with us?”
  • “What direction to we need to head in?”
  • “What can I do to get us there?”

Joomla isn’t a giant living in the hillside. It’s us. If I’ve learned one thing over the last four years of being involved with Joomla, it’s that 1 person saying “we will” is worth 1000 people saying “you should” and 100,000 people saying “you suck”.

Let’s aim to turn those people saying “you should” into saying “we will”.

There’s been a lot of great people stading up and saying “we will” in Joomla in 2010, from Phil Locke improving OSM’s fundraising to Paul Orwig and his Joomla Community Magazine team to Jean-Marie and his translation efforts. There have been community efforts such as Our CMS Rocks and distributions such as Molajo. All those people embraced “we will” instead of “you should”.

If we get 100 people to say “we will” and follow through on that promise, we’ll have an outstanding 2011.

New Years Resolution Challenge

If you’re a Joomla blogger, developer or company, I’ve a New Years Resolution challenge:

  • What will you do in 2011 to move us forward?

Post in the comments or blog your answer (I’ll link below to everyone who responds).

Right Here and Now Challenge

Oh, and if you’re one of those people ready to say “we will”, here’s your chance right here and no with the launch of 1.6:

    Hi Steve,

    Completely agree with your post.

Related to what we’ll be doing, I think it’s important to realize that best products and services are based on solid market research and what customers are looking for.

PROBLEM: Most Joomla companies or professionals don’t have time or resources to do proper market research. As a result, a lot of services and products (software) are ill defined and perhaps don’t meet the actual demand of the end users and small business owners.

POSSIBLE ATTEMPT: There is http://ideas.joomla.org/forums/84261-joomla-idea-pool but looking at it it seems to me that ideas are primarily generated and ranked by developers themselves, not small businesses or non-profits for example.

    MY RECOMMENDED SOLUTION:
Now how about if Joomla opened up Google Analytics keywords for all of its official sites (forum, extensions directory and others) and told us what people are looking for and what keywords landed visitors on the sites but might have not provided full answers to their needs and problems?

Perhaps joomla project could even make some money here , selling this data for a fee, let’s say $100 for an annual report. This way just about anybody could afford it and not just bigger companies and it would be great market research material.
