10 Years of contributing to open source

We’ve reached a milestone of sorts.

In the last few weeks I’m seeing a lot of people celebrating 10 years of contributing to open source.

Many of the most prominent and inspiring people behind the growth of Joomla, Drupal and WordPress started contributing in 2003 and 2004.

10 years ago, open source web software really was in it’s infancy.

  • There were had been no community meetings. The first DrupalCamps, JoomlaDays and WordCamps weren’t held until 2006.
  • There were 5000 members on Drupal.org. There are now over a million.
  • WordPress had only just been created in May 2003.
  • Joomla didn’t exist yet. We were still on Mambo 4.

Personally, I started playing with Mambo in late 2003 and it became my full-time business in 2006.

Now, look where were are:

  • WordPress, Joomla and Drupal run 25% of the web.
  • Together, those three platforms have helped build a multi-billion industry. Automatic and Acquia alone likely have valuations well north of $100 million.
  • There’s a chance we could pass 200 community events around the world.

Congrats to everyone who’s contributed over the last decade. We’ve come a long, long way in that time.
