Joomla.org Changes Policy on Hidden Advertising

Good news over at Joomla.org – extensions with hidden advertising will be clearly labelled.

We’ve covered this topic two times on this blog and thoroughly support the decision. I think this will do quite a bit to protect the reputation of Joomla and 3rd party developers. Its embarrassing to explain to high-value clients why their Joomla sites contain hidden links to hotels,  apartments or random web developers.

This is the notice that will appear on guilty extensions:

Knol.com Another Joomla Site in the News

There’s been a lot of hype this week about Google’s new Knol project that people have been comparing to Wikipedia, and there’s a Joomla connection…

Who are the owners of Knol.com?

Knol.comIts a Dutch vacuum cleaner company who have been in business since 1969. They have a Joomla website using Virtuemart and a Rockettheme template. Apparently it crashed in the aftermath of the announcement, but its back online now and the owner Hilco Knol says he’s not selling:

"Till now have google don’t take contact with us we are positif suprised for using the name KNOL because it is my own name.

We want to launch our own products what you can see on our knol.com Internet site.

For the rest we see whats happening."

Joomla 1.5 Release Candidate 3 Out Now

Joomla! 1.5 RC3 (codename: Takriban) is now available for download and a stable version is "very close".

It’s been 10 weeks since Release Candidate 1 and five weeks since Release Candidate 2. That maybe a good guide to when we can expect the stable version (fingers crossed!).

The SEO is getting better with each version and hopefully the stable version will feature even more improvements.

Overall, if you’re serious about your sites SEO, I’d recommend patience when it comes to upgrading because quite a few important features are still lacking (unique page titles and SEF URL automapping being the two most important) but I’ve no doubt that they’re coming soon, either in the core or via plugins.

Joomla Site Making Worldwide Headlines Part 2

After the Chaser’s week in the world’s spotlight, another Joomla website has caused an online sensation.

MarryOurDaughter.com received 20 million page views in the last two weeks and seemed to be a site where people could sell their teenage daughters into marriage. Prices varied from $20,000 to $50,000. Needless to say a lot of people were pretty angry.

Joomla Site Making Worldwide Headlines

Ever wondered how a Joomla site would handle a Digging or Slashdotting? Pretty well it seems as one Joomla site has been part of the world’s biggest news story during the last week.

The Chaser, the Australian magazine / comedy show which upstaged Bush, Howard, Hu and the rest of APEC in Sydney with their fake motorcade, runs Joomla on their main site: thechaser.com.au. They use Virtuemart, Performs, Blastchat and a Rocket Theme template.

Group Jive Logo

GroupJive Springs Back to Life

GroupJiveSad but true. When our clients ask for social networking we almost always them advise them to use Drupal. Its user profile system is comparable to Joomla’s Community Builder, but Drupal is a better choice because of its immensely powerful groups system. Using Organic Groups, Drupal users can create and manage their own groups, adding on dozens of other features from forums and blogs to photo galleries and even registrations. If Joomla is going to compete for social networking sites, it needs groups. It needs Group Jive, the one extension attempting to meet that need.

Unfortunately, things haven’t looked good recently. Development moved to a new site, slowed down and finally at the end of May, the developers of Group Jive admitted that the extension’s development "hasn’t proceeded like you expected". They asked for help.

The good news is that the request worked. Mark Raborn, the Program Manager, posted that the GJ development team now has 23 people on board. A roadmap is apparently in the works and the release of GroupJive 1.5 now has a new lease of life.

Good news for GJ and good news for Joomla! as a whole. Head on over to GroupJive.org and find out more.
