Google Analytics

Google Analytics Goals in Joomla

Google AnalyticsThere’s been a lot of talk in SEO circles recently about conversions.

Its easy to tell how much money you’re making, but how do you test how well your site is converting well? How do you tell which pages are inspiring people to buy your products? How do you find out where the good customers are coming from and which sites are just sending you time-wasters and tire-kickers? Goals in Google Analytics.

What the Bleep is the Title Alias?

"What the bleep is the Title Alias? Do I fill it in? Should I leave it blank? Help!"

This is definitely one the most common questions I get from clients using Joomla for the first time. Theres nothing to indicate what its for, and if you click on the "Help" button you get something thats less than helpful:

"Title Alias: Enter a short name for this Item."

Thanks for that! So this is my best attempt to answer that question and save myself from answering it again too many times in the future… Just what is the Title Alias for?

How to Make a 2 Level Menu with Extended Menu

Ludhiana.net.in MenuYesterday we talked about how to create a professional-looking tree menu using Extended Menu.

Today we have a quick tutorial on how to connect two copies of Extended Menu to make a menu thats twice as good. Well, maybe not that good, but will allow you to create a neat parent-child menu. You can see an example of this menu working on Ludhiana.net.in.

This way to doing this things has one major advantage and disadvantage compared to the more common child-parent setup that you can see on site such as AJC.com.

  • Advantage: The child menu links area only appears if any are published. Otherwise the menu area will neatly hide.
  • Disadvantage: This menu isn’t so dynamic. Users need to click through to see the children.

How to Create a Vertical, Expanding Menu

In today’s post we’ll show you how to get add a clean and SEO-friendly menu to your Joomla site. This tutorial was inspired by several recent site audits we’ve done that revealed serious problems with dropdowns menus.

Four Frequent Problems With Dropdown Menus

  • Menu sprawl. People think that because they can have 100 menus links, they should. More menu links are counterproductive. They only confuse visitors.
  • Visual sprawl. Dropdowns tend to hide items underneath and often conflict with other scripts/
  • Bad SEO. This isn’t true for some dropdowns but if I often do SEO audits for large sites that only have 5 or 6 pages indexed. Why? They built a flashy Javascript or Flash dropdown menu.
  • Unclear. When someone has clicked on a dropdown option, they need to hover over the menu to see them again.

How to Control the “Read More” on Joomla’s Frontpage

A simple tip today. This small Joomla code hack is designed to help those of you who have a lot of people submitting content to their site.

Everyone writes and submits in their own way, so its easy to end up with some contributors just writing a single line in the "intro" box and others entering their whole article.

With this hack, it doesn’t matter. You can cut off all frontpage items with a "Read More…" after 200 words, giving your site a clean, professional look.

Joomla Weekly News Hits the Shelves

joomla-weekly-news.pngOne of the most interesting Joomla developments in 2007 has been a new magazine created every week by one man – Brian Teeman, a former member of the Joomla core team.

Each weekly release has the following features:

  • A focus on a particular theme. Week 5 had the theme of "hunger" and Week 6 was "Africa". Brian hunts down and reviews around a dozen quality Joomla sites in each niche.
  • An update of all the latest extensions released for Joomla.
  • Five minute interviews with key figures in the Joomla world.
  • An overview of the latest code changes in the run-up to the release of Joomla 1.5.
  • A weekly rant about a Joomla topic that makes someone mad.

It really is a labor of love for Brian and that attention shines through the PDFs.

You can read the discussion about each issue in the Joomla forums and you can download each issue from the Joomla forge.

Issue #7 is due out tomorrow (Sat, Feb. 23rd) and the theme is going to be "Television". It would be great if as many Joomla people as possible could subscribe, contribute and support to Brian in his work.
