Good and Bad Internal Linking

What are Internal Links?

Internal links to your site are the links that reside on pages that belong to your domain. So links to subdomain and subfolders also count.

Why Do This Automatically?

If you have a lot of content on your site it can be hard for search engines to work out which page is most relevant for a particular search term. You can help them by automatically linking from a keyphrase to a highly relevant page for that topic.

For example, whenever I type sh404SEF it automatically links to our review of that extension. The review is #5 on Google for the phrase “sh404SEF” even though we’ve written many articles about it.

Creating Automatic Internal Links with Joomla

There’s a great component called “Simply Links” which allows you to create internal links across your site.

Example of Good Automatic Internal Links

Here are two newspaper sites, each with very different tactics when it comes to their links and their landing pages:

ironmanlinks

The good option.

  • Links are underlined and easy to spot.
  • Links only appear once.
  • Links are to clearly defined, specific terms.

Example of Bad Automatic Internal Links

hawkslinks

Where is this bad?

  • The links are hard to spot.
  • The same link is repeated dozens of times in the article.
  • The text of link isn’t specific … “hawks” could mean many things besides the sports team.

Different Kinds of Landing Page: Information

downeylanding

The details option. This pages focuses on creating an authoritative list of all the actor’s movie appearances and co-stars. They do link to some articles about his work but only lower down the page.

Different Kinds of Landing Page: News

hawkslanding

The news option. All the latest news articles on the team. There’s little background information aside from a small box linking to some statistics and roster details.

Analyze Your Internal Links

You can find out how many pages on your site currently link to a particular page with a query like this:

link:http://www.alledia.com/blog/joomla-urls/review-of-sh404sef-url-extension/ site:alledia.com

This tells me that about 30 pages on alledia.com link to our review of sh404SEF.

You can also head over to Google Webmaster Tools. Go to Links >> Internal Links and you’ll see a list like this:

See Your Site As Google Does

SEO-Browser.comI recently came across a cool SEO tool:

http://www.seo-browser.com

SEO-Browser.com displays a website the way search engines view your site.  The site is displayed with all images and formatting removed, leaving just the links, headings, and text.

Viewing a website the way the search engines do reminds us of and enforces the key elements of SEO.

I have used this tool to show clients how their web site looks to the search engines.  Seeing your site as simply text demonstrates how important relevant text is.

Getting Started With Links to Your Joomla Site

One of the hardest things for a new site owner to do is start generating links. However, because you’ve built your site in Joomla, you have the chance to get? a good number of valuable links.

Earlier this week we talked about using Siteground’s strategy of dominating the search results with extra sites. This is an alternate strategy that involves building positive links to bolster your online reputation. It helps you fill the search results with positive mentions of your business and provides protection against negative news. I’d love to have a dollar for everyone who’s said “we decided to do business with you after searching through your results on Google”.

Siteground.com and Search Results Domination

SitegroundLast year I wrote a couple of posts about how important it was to fill the search engine rankings with positive mentions of your company. Its one of the cornerstones of online reputation management and can help to filter out bad news about your company.

A few people have asked for examples of those techniques and I found a great one today. Siteground is a hosting company that targets the Open Source niche. They offer middle-of-the-road prices and like many other companies they manage servers at the ThePlanet.com. They do offer fast answers to support tickets, but generally they offer the same product as many other companies. So, how do they fill the search engine results with their company and drive more customers than their rivals?

Siteground’s Hosting “Review” Sites

One of their main strategies is to build a large number of extra sites that appear to be a neutral hosting review site, but are in fact simply lead generators:

How You Can Tell They Belong to Siteground?

  • Siteground are the (*cough*) best-reviewed host on each site.
  • There aren’t any live links to any other host.
  • They chose small, no-name hosts to list alongside their own ads. No big brand names to catch the visitors eye.
  • All the sites are on the main Sitegrounds servers: NS1.CLEV1.NET and NS2.CLEV1.NET
  • Each site is linked to all the others via the footer.
  • They used the same designer who does the Joomla templates distributed on Siteground.com.

Be Careful of Joomla Automatic Translation Tools

People love short cuts. People particularly love short cuts that they think will reach 1000s of new customers. So, its easy to understand why people might love automatic translation tools.

  • "I’ve just translated my site into 12 languages by installing a module! Cool!
  • "Hey, my website’s in Chinese now … thats a billion new customers!"

However, this is a clear case where easy is not best.
