Burger King Joomla

Burger King’s Tasty Joomla Site

Burger King JoomlaAlright, I’m obssessed – I love seeing Joomla used for large mainstream sites.

Here’s a tasty Burger King promotion called BKHotKicks.com. It used the “Hot or Not” extension for people to vote on their favorite sneakers. The site was done for a 6 week-long competition and has not been taken offline.

Hat tip to Steven. See the full list of Joomla sites for major companies here. Feel free to e-mail with any sites you see to [email protected].

The Dangers of Bland Text

My favorite discussion at the CMS Expo was during the basic SEO class. We ended up talking about bland, happy talk on websites:

"We provide first-class widgets to satisfied clients", "We offer premier widget solutions to our clients" and other such meaningless, corporate text.

People came up with some great examples and we saw that webdesign companies are the often the biggest offenders:

5 Thoughts from the CMS Expo

CMS Expo1) Organization

Wow – outstanding. Both Expos have run like clockwork. If you think Open Source people are flakes, you haven’t seen an event organized by John, Linda and their team from Chicago.

2) Core + Commercial

It was great to see Anthony from the Joomla core in attendance. Hopefully we’ll see commercial developers at April’s Joomla Day in Las Vegas.

Thanksgiving Turkey

Open Question: New Holiday Discoveries?

Thanksgiving TurkeyGot to be honest, as a Brit in the United States, Thanksgiving has always been a turkey of a holiday.

It always seemed like Christmas-lite a few weeks early. People watch sports, sleep, eat turkey and even listen to Christmas songs. Besides, it also messes up the school semester. Kids work for 12 weeks without a break, have Thanksgiving and then go back for just another 3 weeks. If I ever pull an Arnold Schwarzenegger and run for office, I’ll propose moving Thanksgiving to middle of October.

Anyway, this year I finally saw the point … it’s a few days off work to discover cool new resources. Rather than just get my head down and work, it was nice to just browse the web and try things out. Here’s the best of what I found:

Google Search Wiki

Googles SearchWiki and You

Google Search WikiI’m catching a flight in a couple of hours but had so many emails about this that I’ll try to sum up my thoughts:

Google made a major change overnight, allowing people to vote and comment on listings. You can vote websites up or down using the arrow buttons and remove a site completely using the X button.

The project is called “SearchWiki” and is another stage in their attempt to personalize search results. So if I searched for “Mambo, I’d get the software, if a dancer did the same search they’d get the dance and if the surfer did it, they’d get the clothing company. That’s the goal anyway.

Joomla Yellow Pages

Selling Joomla Yellow Pages

Joomla Yellow PagesWe’re selling JoomlaYellowPages.com.

  • What is it? The biggest directory of Joomla developers. It has been online since August 2006 and has over 300 developers are listed.
  • Rankings? They’re good. They’d better be as we’re an SEO company! The site is #1 and #2 on Google for "joomla companies, #2 for "joomla designers", #3 for "joomla developers". It also ranks very well for geo phrases such as "continent joomla", "country joomla" and "state/province joomla".
  • Revenue? Subscriptions, Adsense and webdesign clients contacting us via the site.

  • Software? Joomla 1.0, Mosets Tree for the directory, MamboCharge for the subscriptions.

  • Reason for selling? It could be doing a lot better. We used it to find webdesign projects but we don’t do much client work any longer.
  • Interested? Feel free to email me via [email protected] and I’ll send traffic and revenue stats.

I’ll also throw in DrupalYellowPages.com and OSCYellowPages.com to the lucky buyer.
