A Beginner’s Guide to Domain Hacks

Over the last few years the domain business has profesionalized rapidly with big corporations forming, each controlling thousands of domains. Companies like iREIT and Moniker have led the way using large statistical packages to analyze every feature of a domain and its value.

However, there’s one aspect of the domain world where the only limit is your imagination (oh, and your willingness to deal with obscure government organizations in tiny islands and countries).

Domain hacks are basically puns. The simplest way to describe them is that they are domain names that actually use the extension as part of the word.

So for example, Blogs.com is a traditional domain name that might cost you millions of dollars, but Blo.gs is a domain hack available for a much cheaper price. All you need to do to get a .gs domain is to hunt down the registry for the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

The most famous domain hack of all is del.icio.us which utilizes the .us code for the United States.

Joomla Extension of the Month – January 07

Extension of the MonthOur first choice for extension of the month in 2007 is the Run-Digital RSS Feed Manager.

We love to pick extensions that are free, user-friendly and that we use ourselves on key sites. The RD RSS Feed Manager fits all those criteria. It is free to download from their site, simple to use and we utilize it to create multiple RSS Feeds on Alledia.com and for important clients.

After installation, you need only click "New", choose which areas of your site you wish to include in a particular RSS Feed, and click "Save". You’re done. You’ll have an RSS link that will look something like this:

http://www.alledia.com/index.php?option=com_rd_rss&id=2

If you want to make the URL more manageable you can register with a site such as Feedburner.com and they will allow you to produce a feed that looks like: http://feeds.feedburner.com/alledia

Works great. Works easy. Works for free! Congratulations to Run-Digital

Keeping Track of Your Domain Names

There was bad news for one New England Church this week as they learned they’d forgotten to renew their domain name. To make things worse, the name was purchased by people with something very different than Bibles on their mind.

The mix-up happened a few weeks ago when the church changed Internet service providers and the church failed to keep track of the domain’s expiry date. The church’s pastor said he believed the church could keep its Web site name but the old service provider put the address up for sale and it was bought by a pornographic Web site.

The church has spent the last few weeks trying to figure out how this happened, he said, and recently received a letter from the Internet service provider admitting it made a mistake by selling the domain name.

The pastor said the Internet company told him pornographic sites often like to buy Web addresses once used by churches. Although the mistake was troubling, the pastor was able to have some sense of humor about it.

"It will be interesting to see who shows up to church now," he said. (Quotes from SeaCoastOnline.com)

So what can you use to keep track of your domains? I’m sure many of you have domains spread across multiple registrars after seeing a special offers here and there. Its not unusual for people to call us up and admit that they’ve forgotten WHERE they registered their domain, let alone WHEN it expires. We used to do the same thing ourselves.

How can you make sure that you never end up in the same situation as the church?

  1. We use a product called "Domain Punch Pro" to keep details on all our domains and those of our clients. It’s available for $129 from DomainPunch.com and soon pays for itself if your domains are valuable and important to your  company. We really haven’t had any domain registration problems since buying it and its also helped notify us when several great domains that have dropped.
  2. Use the innovative domain registrar called Rebel.com . Their free software allows you to track all your domains across all registrars.
  3. We register all important domain names for at least three years. Not only does this provide increased security, but it provides a boost in search engine rankings. Google likes to see sites where the owner has made a long-term commitment.
  4. Finally, for those of you serious about looking after multiple domain names, you can always become a reseller. Our site, AllediaDomains.com is affiliated with ResellerClub.com. Not only do we get cheap domain registrations but we can add registrar locks on to valuable domains and easily search through expiry dates. One added advantage is that our clients can register their domains in a place that is very simple for us to manage. The downside is that although you can get started with a refundable deposit of $199, you need to put down $499 to start getting the big discounts.

Joomla Extension of the Month – February 07

Joomla Extension of the MonthA few weeks back we asked the question, "How do you backup your sites?"

Copying the database is easy, with the help of the Jombackup Daily MySQL Backup Bot but safely backing up and restoring the files has always been much more difficult.

We’ve tried every component available without finding one that works satisfactorily – until now. Joomla! Pack is a simple upload-and-click component from Nicholas K. Dionysopoulos. What we particularly like about it is that it comes with an installer which makes moving or reinstalling sites from backup very easy indeed.

A very worthy Extension of the Month!

Church Forgets to Renew Domain Name and Gets Nasty Surprise

There was bad news for one New England Church this week as they learned they’d forgotten to renew their domain name. To make things worse, the name was purchased by people with something very different than Bibles on their mind.

Although the article tries hard not to mention it, the old website address seem to have been found by the readers at Digg. For obvious reasons I won’t post it here.

So what can you use to make sure you keep track of your domains? I’m sure many of you have domains spread across multiple registrars after seeing a special offers here and there. Its not unusual for people to call us up and admit that they’ve forgotten WHERE they registered their domain, let alone when it expires. We used to do the same thing ourselves.

Making MosTree More Search-Engine Friendly

Apart from Alledia.com, the most popular site we run is JoomlaYellowPages.com, based on the excellent MosTree directory component from Mosets.com.

The site has only been up and running for 4 months, but it has already got some good search engine rankings, positioned as #8 in Google for "Joomla Developers" and #7 in Google for "Joomla Development".

We started to kick around some ideas to make the site more search engine friendly and decided to apply some simple changes to MosTree.

Can Good Hosting Help Your Search Engine Ranking?

Alledia Speed

A great blog post over at ModernLifeisRubbish.co.uk yesterday about how good hosting  can really help your Search Engine rankings and about how bad hosting and site optimization can cause you a lot of trouble.

Stuart Brown got onto this issue after discovering a little noticed set of statistics in Google’s Webmaster toolbox. Basically, Google is keeping track of how fast your pages load.

Heres how to find those stats:

Adding RSS Feeds to your Browser Bar with Joomla

A quick little tutorial to show how to add a little RSS button to the browser bar when people visit your site.

  1. Go to Run-Digital.com to get their RSS Feed Manager for Joomla! (Click here to get it). Install it as a component.
  2. Take the url of your RSS feed from the component and go to FeedBurner.com. Sign up and register your feed. They should give you an easy to remember and customize URL. Ours is simply: http://feeds.feedburner.com/alledia
  3. Add the following code to the head of your template:

If you want different RSS Feeds available on each page you will need to copy your template and assign the copies to the right pages unless someone can come up with a clever work-around….

Thanks to Sam over at SiteCoffee.com for tips with this.

On 1.5, you’ll need to turn off the default RSS feeds by going to Menus >> Main Menu >> Parameters (Advanced) >> Show a Feed Link >> No

Cleaning Dirty Search Engine Footprints

I was online looking for a printer the other today and took to browsing through Hewlett Packard’s search results. After flicking through for a while, something started to feel odd? Wasn’t there a big scandal in the news about HP recently? Where was it? Everything seemed rosy in the Search Engine results.

If you search for "Hewlett Packard" you need to go to page 6 on Google to find even the first mention of the corporate spying scandal that hit the company in 2006. Yahoo is even kinder. You need to go to result #264 before you find the faintest hint of scandal.
